Provides disaster preparedness education and emergency services to prepare people in order to reduce the effects of disaster. Based on Red Cross assessment of damage to the displaced residents home, direct assistance may be provided to meet the immediate needs of persons as a result of fire, hurricanes, etc. This assistance is generally up to 3 nights of shelter and if needed, based on interview with clients, a stipend for food and clothing and in certain circumstances for lost medications to meet immediate needs. Meeting immediate needs does not include longer term housing assistance, utilities or furnishing. Certain additional benefits may be available for veterans, but only when approved by Red Cross and on a case by case basis. Services to armed forces includes worldwide emergency communications network between service men and their families. Courses offered in first aid, CPR/First Aid and water safety. Volunteer personnel support for all Red Cross community services. Volunteer opportunities for youth, age 14 and over include support for community project and learn Leadership Skills. Adult volunteer services include: Disaster Services, Health and Safety Education; Youth Services; Services to Military families, Community Disaster Preparedness Education, and Community Volunteer Services.
